From the US perspective, the fear that Russia would move in and attack Japan, was a factor. Also, by 1945, hundreds of thousands, some say millions, of Japanese civilians were dying of starvation. But to the military, surrender was not acceptable. Thousands of Allied troops would have died in an invasion was yet another factor presented to Truman by his advisors.
